There’s no denying that big data is here to stay. It offers tremendous opportunities for companies looking for a competitive advantage. But it also offers job seekers opportunities to grow in their current field or make a complete change. We’ve highlighted seven new job fields that have developed as a result of big data and will continue to be in high demand:
1. Computer Systems Analyst
A Computer Systems Analyst studies an organization’s current computer systems and procedures and design information systems solutions to help the organization operate more efficiently and effectively. They bring business and information technology (IT) together by understanding the needs and limitations of both. As a result, the demand for Computer System Analysts has increased 89 percent over the past year.
2. Data Scientist
Don’t picture test tubes and lab coats – these types of scientists use math and statistics to process raw data. Typically, data scientist roles are more advanced than other big data roles and thus require more experience, more advanced degrees and a computing background.
3. Dataviz
Short for data visualization, it’s the art (and science) of putting numbers into graphics that are easy to understand and use. Interactivity is key in dataviz, as it makes critical information accessible to company executives and other stakeholders. This supports their ability to provide directive action from the results.
4. Cloud Specialist
The emergence of “the cloud” has resulted in IT becoming a more strategic player in the direction of the business. Cloud Specialists provide expertise, design, engineering, troubleshooting of the cloud environment, collaborate with project managers and engineers to ensure cloud computing best practices are followed and applied. This position helps to bridge the gap between the business and IT.
5. Big Data Architect
Big data has created a plethora of structured and unstructured data, which needs to be integrated from different unrelated data sources. A Big Data Architect is the expert for a company’s big data platform architecture and solutions, and will need to demonstrate the understanding of concepts, best practices and functions to implement a big data solution in a corporate environment. This position entails being able to have an end-to-end vision, and to see how a logical design will translate into one or more physical databases, and how the data will flow through the successive stages involved.
6. ETL Developer
ETL is short for “Extract, Transfer and Load.” If you’ve ever had issues importing or exporting data, these developers are the ones you want to consult. An ETL Developer specializes in extracting data from various sources and making sure it imports properly. Additionally, these individuals are responsible for ensuring data is integrated in a way that benefits the company.
7. Predictive Analytics Developer
The Predictive Analytics Developer is primarily responsible for answering all of the “What If?” questions using data-driven analytics against business rules and expert knowledge. A Predictive Analytics Developer is able to discover hidden patterns in data that the human expert may not see. It is in fact the result of mathematics applied to data. Given that predictive analytics applies to a myriad of datasets in different industries and verticals, this field is indispensable for decision support.
