A thank you note is essential to let your interviewer know that you’re not only appreciative of the opportunity, but willing to go the extra mile for the position up for grabs. Whether you spoke with an entire human resources team or just one individual from your potential employer, here are five tips you can use to write an engaging thank you note.
1. Address Any Lingering Questions.
If there were one or two points that the interviewer clearly wanted to expand upon, use the thank you note as an opportunity to do so. Bring up topics that were central to your discussion, and try to fill in any gaps that may have been left during the conversation. For example, if your interviewer appeared to be interested in learning about one specific job you had in the past, elaborate on it in your thank you note.
2. Reiterate Your Qualifications.
Once the conversation is over, you’ll want to remind the interviewer why you’re the best candidate for the job. The thank you note is an ideal tool to use as you look to highlight your skills and experience one last time after the interview has concluded. You can also utilize the note to point to areas of your resume that may not have been discussed during the conversation.
3. Remind the Interviewer of Your Conversation.
Adding in specific tidbits of conversation in your thank you note can remind the interviewer of your discussion. For example, if you spent time discussing your experience at a prior company, mention this portion of the interview in your thank you note. You’ll jog the memory of the reader and place yourself in the front of his or her mind.
4. Thank Each Individual Separately.
This is especially necessary if you spoke to a group of interviewers, rather than just one individual. Your note does not need to be long, but thanking people for their participation (hiring managers included) can reiterate your interest in the position, as well as the company as a whole.
5. Provide Contact Information.
In your thank you note, don’t forget to provide information on the best way to reach you. This is also a prime opportunity to direct the interviewer to other resources, such as your online portfolio or examples of your work.
By taking some of these tips into consideration, you can ensure that your thank you note resonates with the interviewer and gives you the best chance to be hired.
